Intel – “Windows 8 Will Bring Us Some Wild New Form Factors”

In addition to some new form factors, Intel showed us some interesting new Windows 8 interface ideas. Keep in mind that these are proofs-of-concept rather than working devices, so they may or may not actually appear on the market. The most interesting new UI demo was the Nikishki notebook, a clamshell with a big transparent trackpad below the keyboard. The trackpad works as a traditional trackpad and then “disables” when you press your palms on it to type. Then, when you close the laptop, some of the screen is visible and you are able to see and use the Windows 8 ...

Google Chrome 17 pre-renders pages you may visit

First noticed by testers of the most recent beta release of Chrome, Google now starts to pre-render pages as the user types them into the address bar according to the official Google Chrome blog. The feature has many similarities to the Google Instant tweak of the search engine. If we Microsoft watchers are right, both Windows 8 client and server should be out in 2012, possibly in the first half of the year. Microsoft is touting Windows Server 8 as a key private-cloud building block, which means virtualization will be critical to the next release. Microsoft demonstrated only one of what officials said ...

Microsoft Offers First Sneak Peek of Windows 8

Tired of all those Windows 7 ads? You may or may not be glad to know Microsoft just started demonstrating public prototypes of its successor, tentatively (but not definitively) called Windows 8. Windows President Steven Sinofsky gave the first live demo of Windows 8 here at the D9 conference in southern California. At first blush, it seems like the most radical overhaul of the aging OS in its nearly 30-year history. Designed to be as usable on a touchscreen as on a traditional desktop device, it borrows much of the look and feel of Windows Phone 7. ...
